The Honeymoon is Over: A Fresh Start for Follow the Wife

If the honeymoon has to end, it might as well end with a cocktail and a creepy totem pole.

Greetings, blog readers. It’s been quiet here for a while, but I hope you’re still there. I can explain: I took a short hiatus to do some reflecting on the meaning of this blog. I started writing Follow the Bride posts over at Creative Odds ‘n Ends to chronicle my wedding planning adventures. It became a place to gather opinions and share the many tips I was learning along the way. I love that I now have each step of the planning process documented and can look back on that exciting time whenever I want. It’s sometimes hard to believe that a year ago today Keith and I had just attended the final walk through at our wedding venue. I blinked and suddenly we are one month away from our first anniversary. How did that happen?!

Since last spring I’ve been writing about my new adventures as a married woman. I’ve shared my favorite pictures from our honeymoon and discussed important family purchases. I created this blog to illustrate my journey through wifedom. My hope is that it picks up where all the wedding blogs leave off to give readers and intimate and honest look at what it’s like to be a newlywed. Recently, though, things were getting a little cluttered and I didn’t think my message was getting through. Well, I’ve polished off the old thinking cap and I’m ready to take a second crack at it. Here we go, folks. As they like to say, "The honeymoon is over!"

Keeping a Honeymoon Journal

On our honeymoon, I kept a journal of our experiences. Each day I’d write about what we did and saw. I included names of restaurants, beaches and parks and I described people we met while we were out. I tried to put as much detail into each entry so that when we read them back we’d remember the little things that might normally be forgotten. The journal isn’t anything fancy—it’s actually only a word document on the laptop we traveled with. But I’m so glad that I kept it. I found the journal a few days ago while I was searching for something else and really enjoyed reading it back. I hadn’t forgotten much about our trip, but having such detailed accounts of our days really helped bring our vacation back to life. And on a chilly, errr freezing cold December day, it was exactly the escape I needed. Here’s an excerpt from the day we took surfing lessons in Maui.

“Today was our honeymoon special surfing lesson. I was a little nervous, but mostly excited. Keith told me the lesson came with champagne, so how hard could this be? We started out with a great breakfast at Longhi’s. It was a pretty, black and white cafĂ© right on the water. Keith had delicious mac-nut pancakes and I had a quiche. It was the fuel we needed to surf!

So we arrived at the spot, which was literally a dirt road off a somewhat major highway. Hmm. We applied SPF 30 while we waited for a sign or something. I wasn’t sure. Eventually a woman pulled over, she was the photographer. (What?!) She handed us a bottle of champagne. It was warm and we had no glasses—guess we’re drinking it after! Then she led us down to the beach to meet our instructor, Sharkie. When I heard Sharkie would be teaching us to surf I imagined a typical Hawaiian “dude” Who said things like, “Cowabunga” and used the word “knarly” to describe everything. I was wrong. Sharkie looked like a surfer, he was pretty mellow and relaxed with long salty blond hair. But he didn’t say, “Cowabunga.” Oh well. We asked Sharkie right away, what makes a good surfer. I thought he’d say balance (check), agility (check) and flexibility (check). He said patience and acceptance. Maybe we won’t be so great at this. Sharkie took about 10 minutes to teach us all the moves on the beach. Most were similar to yoga, which I kind of know how to do. Then we hit the waves, or the small ripples in the water that were passing for waves that day. (See photo above.) That’s where Sharkie says acceptance comes in. We were going to give it a try after all, so acceptance (check).

We paddled around a little and chatted with the Shark Man. Then all of the sudden, he’d be like, “go, now, paddle!” and I’d paddle, but I wouldn’t get anywhere and then I’d feel the wave take me, but it was really Sharkie pushing me into the wave. And then I’d practice my yoga move stand up technique, and I was surfing. Keith was really good, he has a nice wide stand that impressed Sharkie. We both got up on our first try and I’m pretty sure we both fell on our second. After the third we were feeling pretty good, but the waves had died out.”

See that. Not only did I give you an awesome tip for your Honeymoon, I also gave you a rad little surfing lesson, too! Now you’re more than prepared for your next beach vacation with your honey.

Has anyone every kept a log or journal from one of their vacations? Will you try it on your next trip?

Inspiration: Bright Dahlia

Lately, I’ve been craving neon colors. (Which is perfect timing because they’re trending for Spring 2012!) A few weeks ago it was magenta that had my heart. This week it’s the lovely and loud shade of pink that J. Crew so correctly classifies as Bright Dahlia. I’m in love.

J Crew's Adrienne dress in Bright Dahlia

I first spotted the hue on a skinny belt from Ann Taylor Loft. I had it in my hand, but decided to save my money instead. (What? Did I just say that?) So great news came last night when I saw it was 50% off, plus free shipping. And bad news quickly followed when I learned the item was sold out. So pink is popular. I can’t say I’m surprised.

I found this image from Brooklyn Bride on Pinterest and I want to move in.

While there is something really special about soft romantic shades and monochromatic color palettes, I’m really loving bold pops of color right now. Contrasting shades can come off as casual, and I think the trick is to use small punches of color in unexpected places. For example, wear a hot pink headband or decorate the back of your chairs with streamers in a look-at-me shade. Why stop there! Hang cream-colored escort cards from bright ribbon or add a big fat (hot pink) kiss to your favor tags. If you can weave color into unexpected places, you’ll have your guests’ attention all night long.

Fun fashion tip ---> If you love neons but not enough to marry them pick out accessories in bold shades to pack on your honeymoon. Mixing in a few new pieces will refresh your wardrobe, making it feel like new. Plus, the eye-catching colors will make your photos come out great.

Do you dare to go bold with a hot neon shade? Tell me how you would incorporate Bright Dahlia into your wedding or wardrobe?

Honeymoon: Take Me Back to the Black Sand Beaches

Today was a beautiful day. Granted, I spent most of it freezing my butt off in an overly air conditioned office building, but when I finally made my way outside for lunch I realized it was actually really gorgeous. And by the time I got home it was still so nice out. The moon was big and round and a bright orange color. As perfect as the weather felt today, it still fell just short of the amazing, heaven-like qualities we experienced in Maui. I want to go back and for some reason today just felt like the right day to revisit our trip.

In Maui, there were a ton of things to do. We could have stayed there for another two weeks and still have an itinerary a mile long. But I sunburn easily, so we shortened our stay and tried to squeeze in as much as we could. On Keith's birthday we put on our adventurer caps, turned down the top of our Jeep and hit the Road to Hana. This road has twists and turns and some pretty amazing views. And at the end we discovered a beautiful state park with black sand beaches and a blow hole. (Yes, a blow hole.) We drove over bridges and past waterfalls and all of it would have made me feel like I was on Lost, but I was too afraid to watch that show and therefore don't know much about what it feels like, besides there's a smoke monster. Anyway. Here are some pictures from our ride on the Road to Hana. Enjoy, lovers!

Honeymoon Recap: Kauai

Have I left you on the edge of your seats long enough? Are you dying to see more of our honeymoon pictures? It's my pleasure to transport you now to the beautiful island of Kauai, The Garden Island.

We were welcomed at the airport, not with traditional leis, but with a torrential rain storm. And it was raining again the next morning so we decided to do a little exploring. It was a nice easy start to our well deserved vacation!

The view from the Fantasy Suite

Black lava rock = so pretty!

I loved how this sand bar created a double shoreline.

We took a drive to Waimea Canyon and stopped at every scenic overlook we passed.

And Keith tried to impress his new wife with his toe shoes.

Something that would only happen to us: By the time we reached the canyon, it was completely full of fog! So we took a nature walk instead.

And it was a very foggy nature walk!

Have a great Friday everyone! I hope your weekend is sunny.

I Miss My Honeymoon

After a pool-side happy hour, I thought I was a master of still life photography.
What do you think of my honeymoon ring shots?

Today, we started the day with a hot cup of 100 percent Kauai coffee. On our honeymoon we stopped at the Kauai Coffee farm where we got to wander through the rows of coffee plants and sip samples of all their flavors in the visitor center. We bought a few pounds to bring home and I was ecstatic to dig into them today.

Here's the coffee before I drank it!

Then for dinner we ate mahi mahi marinated in lime juice and topped with a macadamia nut crust. It was delicious and reminded us of one of our favorite dinners from the trip. We ate fresh fish almost every night, but each meal was undoubtedly better with a frozen drink.

What fell in between the two meals today was work, laundry and a quick trip to the gym, hardly vacation-worthy tasks. But it was nice to have a little taste of our honeymoon.

I'm working on the full honeymoon report so please come back!
